What counts as proof that USCIS received my I-589?
Last reviewed: August 24, 2026
General information only. Filing methods can change. Follow current USCIS instructions for the filing method available in your situation.
Preserve the strongest official record generated by the filing method. For an online filing when permitted, keep the submission confirmation, a copy of the exact submitted application, and subsequent USCIS receipt notice or account record. For a permitted paper filing, keep the exact mailed package, tracking or delivery evidence, and the USCIS receipt notice when issued.
A shipping record can show delivery to an address, but it is not the same thing as a USCIS adjudicative receipt record. Likewise, a draft saved on a computer is not proof of filing.
If a receipt is delayed or filing status is unclear, use current USCIS case/account and Contact Center resources. Never recreate, alter, or backdate a receipt notice. Keep every notice in chronological order and preserve envelopes when their dates may matter.
