How should I name and organize my I-589 files on my computer?
Last reviewed: August 24, 2026
General information only. Filing procedures can change. This article explains record organization and does not determine where, when, or how a particular person must file Form I-589.
Keep a master case folder and separate working copies from filed copies. A practical structure is 01-Forms, 02-Notices, 03-Identity-Travel, 04-Statements, 05-Evidence, 06-Translations, and 07-Proof-of-Filing. Use descriptive filenames such as 2026-08-24_I-589_working-copy.pdf instead of scan1.pdf.
Do not overwrite the exact version that was filed. Save it as a clearly labeled filed copy together with the receipt, electronic submission confirmation, delivery record, fee record if applicable, and later notices. If you revise a working copy, give the revision a new date or version number.
The filing destination and procedure matter. USCIS and EOIR use different systems and rules. EOIR currently permits eligible unrepresented respondents to submit Form I-589 through Respondent Access after DHS files the NTA and EOIR accepts it. Always confirm current official instructions before submitting anything.
