Keep asylum-fee records as a separate, permanent part of the asylum case file. Current fee rules have changed rapidly, and in 2026 litigation has affected how USCIS implements consequences related to the Annual Asylum Fee. Your own notice and payment confirmation are therefore important evidence of what USCIS asked you to do and what you did.
Save the notice first
Keep every page of the USCIS fee notice. Record the notice date, amount stated, due date, receipt number or A-number shown on the notice, and the official payment instructions.
Do not publish or casually share a copy containing personal identifiers.
Save payment confirmation
After paying through the official government process, save or print the confirmation page and any emailed receipt. Record the payment date and confirmation number. Keep a PDF or screenshot in the same folder as the notice.
A useful filename is 2026-09-14-annual-asylum-fee-payment-confirmation.pdf rather than screenshot123.png.
Do not rely on a bank statement alone
A bank or card statement can be useful secondary proof, but it may not identify the asylum case or government confirmation number. Preserve the official confirmation whenever possible.
Check the current USCIS status before paying
As of September 14, 2026, USCIS's Annual Asylum Fee portal contains an alert about an August 5, 2026 federal court injunction affecting implementation of consequences for failure to pay, and USCIS has reopened payment for certain outstanding fees. Because this can change, use the current USCIS portal and your personal notice rather than an old article to decide what action is required.
